Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), also known as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a narrowed aortic valve in patients with aortic stenosis. Instead of traditional open-heart surgery, TAVI involves inserting a catheter through the femoral artery (in the leg) or another access point and guiding it to the heart. A new, collapsible valve is placed within the existing damaged valve. Once positioned, the new valve expands and starts functioning immediately, improving blood flow and relieving symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath. It is often used for patients at high risk for conventional surgery.
